Cacchiamo

History

The ancient feudal fillage of Cacchiamo is about 20 km far from Calascibetta. Previously the village was called "Guaccino" or "Lo Cacchimo" and was part of Sperlinga territory until 1568, when it was acquired by Nicolò Ferreri to whom it belonged for a century.

Then, in 1733 the new owner, Donna Giovanna Lanza Castello entrusted the village to Francesco Benedetto Bongiorno, who ordered the construction of a residence for his family.

This village was a resting place for travellers and a staging point for shepherds during the transhumance. Over time a population settled permanently in this village and this encouraged the demographic increase and the construction of new buildings.

In 1800, the lack of direct heirs caused the exctinction of Bongiorno family and the incorporation of Cacchiamo as a part of Calascibetta.

Villa Masseria

The masseria of Cacchiamo was originally built in the second half of the 16th century by the Ferreri family. Between 1733 and 1762, right next to the road linking it with the surrounding territories of Gangi, Nicosia, and Calascibetta, Baron Bongiorno wanted the construction of a mansion with a central baglio, which could become a dwelling building for the baronial family in that fief. The impression is that of an enclosed feudal baglio; the quadrangular courtyard, accessed by a high arched doorway, is surrounded by a series of buildings, among which the manor house stands out, occupying the central part of the wing opposite the entrance. Inside, the villa-masseria was equipped with furnishings and ornaments, with frescoes and tiled floors still perfectly visible today, which made this residence not a simple country house but a small residential palace. Being a baronial mansion, the villa was equipped with a small chapel, where the family prayed, adorned with a picture of Mary Most Holy of the Conception and a small altar, on which a Cross rested on a pedestal. In 1998, the villa masseria of Càcchiamo was declared a monument of significant historical-artistic and architectural interest.
